PTW support to the Community led Alternative Right of Passage

This is programme was initiated by the Maasai Community to replace the FGM as a rite of passage from childhood to adulthood. Initially, in the Maasai community FGM was used as the rite of passage and it was accompanied by apprenticeship trainings on roles and responsibilities of womanhood transitioning into motherhood.

FGM is rightfully recognized as a form of gender based violence, against human rights. It also affects girls’ academic achievements and economic empowerment; hence communities are now sensitized to discard the inhuman practice. With the aspect of transition from childhood to adulthood there is need for celebration and training which birthed the event at Amboseli Primary School, Kajiado between 26th to 29th November 2019. All our PTW girls were a part of this celebration.

The National Anti-FGM Board developed a structured curriculum where girls are to be trained in Menstrual hygiene, effects of FGM, Health and Sanitation, Careers, Etiquette, among others. The event climax was characterized by training sessions, blessings from the Elders and a thanksgiving candle light night service during the evening.

Since the programme is community led, it depends on support from partners such as PTW who advocate for anti-FGM to sponsor transport of girls to the venue, pay for meals and provide branding materials to enhance the campaign across the County. The Amboseli alternative rite event was sponsored by AMREF Kenya and Path to Womanhood Foundation where 600+ girls participated from all over the country.
